BPN unit joins IFC program.
BPN Brasil, the Brazilian unit of Banco Português de Negocios (BPN), has joined the global trade finance program of IFC as an issuing bank, IFC said in a statement.
BPN Brasil focuses on loans to SMEs and is the eighth issuing bank in Brazil and the first in the country as a confirming and issuing bank in the program, IFC said.
IFC invested US$509mn in projects in Brazil in fiscal 2007, more than any other Latin American country.
IFC is the private sector arm of the World Bank and its global trade finance program provides funding for banks for short-term pre-export financing and eases access to foreign markets for midsize banks in emerging markets.
In September, BPN Brasil received US$30mn from the Inter-American Investment Corporation to provide working capital loans and revolving credit lines to SMEs.
